Background of the Study
Chemotherapy is a widely used treatment for various types of cancer, including breast, lung, and colorectal cancer. While chemotherapy can be highly effective in treating cancer, it often comes with a range of side effects that can significantly impact the patient’s overall well-being and adherence to treatment. Common chemotherapy-related side effects include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, hair loss, pain, and increased susceptibility to infections. These side effects can be physically debilitating and emotionally distressing, leading some patients to delay or even discontinue their treatment.
Adherence to chemotherapy treatment is critical to ensuring its effectiveness. However, the occurrence of side effects can diminish the patient’s motivation to continue treatment, leading to treatment interruptions or non-compliance. Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abeokuta, located in Ogun State, provides chemotherapy services to cancer patients, and many of these patients experience chemotherapy-related side effects that impact their ability to adhere to the prescribed treatment regimen. Understanding the relationship between chemotherapy side effects and treatment adherence is crucial for improving patient outcomes.
While some patients may be able to cope with or manage the side effects through supportive care interventions, others may find these effects overwhelming, leading to poor adherence. Nurses and other healthcare providers play a key role in managing these side effects, providing patient education, and offering supportive therapies to help patients cope with the challenges of chemotherapy. This study aims to explore how chemotherapy-related side effects influence patient adherence to treatment at FMC Abeokuta and to identify strategies to improve adherence in the face of these challenges.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Chemotherapy-related side effects can significantly affect patients’ willingness and ability to continue their treatment, leading to suboptimal outcomes in cancer care. At Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, many patients undergoing chemotherapy experience a range of debilitating side effects, including nausea, fatigue, and pain, which impact their ability to adhere to the prescribed treatment regimen. Non-adherence to chemotherapy can result in treatment delays, decreased treatment efficacy, and poorer survival outcomes. Despite the availability of supportive care interventions, many patients still struggle with managing the side effects of chemotherapy, which impedes their commitment to the treatment process.
This study seeks to examine the extent to which chemotherapy-related side effects affect treatment adherence at FMC Abeokuta. It will explore the nature of the side effects, the coping mechanisms employed by patients, and the role of healthcare providers in supporting adherence. By understanding the factors that contribute to non-adherence, the study aims to identify potential interventions and strategies that can mitigate these side effects and improve adherence to chemotherapy, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of chemotherapy-related side effects on patients' adherence to treatment at Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta.
2. To identify the most common chemotherapy-related side effects that contribute to treatment non-adherence.
3. To explore strategies to improve adherence to chemotherapy treatment despite the presence of side effects.
Research Questions
1. How do chemotherapy-related side effects affect patients' adherence to treatment at Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta?
2. Which chemotherapy-related side effects are most strongly associated with non-adherence to treatment?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve adherence to chemotherapy treatment despite side effects?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: Chemotherapy-related side effects do not significantly affect patients’ adherence to treatment at Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta.
2. H₀: There is no significant relationship between specific chemotherapy-related side effects and non-adherence to treatment.
3. H₀: Strategies to manage chemotherapy side effects do not significantly improve treatment adherence.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on patients undergoing chemotherapy at Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta. Limitations may include the variability in individual responses to chemotherapy side effects, the subjective nature of self-reported adherence, and potential recall bias in patient responses.
Definitions of Terms
• Chemotherapy-Related Side Effects: The adverse effects experienced by patients as a result of chemotherapy treatment, such as nausea, fatigue, hair loss, and pain.
• Adherence to Treatment: The degree to which patients follow prescribed medical advice and treatment regimens, including the timely administration of chemotherapy.
• Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta: A tertiary healthcare institution in Ogun State, Nigeria, providing medical services including cancer treatment and chemotherapy.
